Butterfly World
Eleanor undertook joint artist residencies with Butterfly World and the AA2A scheme (Artists Access to Art Colleges) at Hertfordshire University between 2013-2014. The Butterfly World, at the edge of St Albans, was a project started by lepidopterist Clive Farrell. The site opened to the public in spring 2009 and was designed to provide a habitat for butterflies and encouraging the return of species that had, or were becoming, extinct to the area with its wildflower meadows and designer gardens. Eleanor’s work from the artist residencies was placed on permanent display in the summer of 2014 in the designer gardens. The starting point for the pieces were drawings made at Butterfly World, which were then transformed into etchings and taken into the medium of glass at Hertfordshire University as part of the AA2A residency. As part of the project she also ran art workshops for children. Sadly Butterfly World was closed permanently in December 2015. It had provided an excellent space to show the work in a natural habitat and in its place of inspiration.
